Sonja Gabalis Mortimer
Acrylic Mixed Media Collage

Sonja Gabalis Mortimer

Sonja Gabalis Mortimer immigrated to Canada from Denmark with her parents settling in Ontario.  At the age of seven, on a visit with her mother to an outdoor children’s water-colour class, Sonja was inspired to create her first piece of work. She has had a paint brush or a pencil in her hand ever since.

Mortimer is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, York University's Fine Art program and a former visual arts specialist for the Peel District School Board. She has continued to teach part time and give workshops.

Mortimer began working with watercolour, then moved on to ceramic relief sculptures, porcelain masks and jewelry. Her clay pieces have been featured in galleries and shops in Ontario and were marketed across Canada and in New York City.

In recent years, Mortimer has turned her attention to mixed media, collage, and acrylic painting. Her body of work has grown increasingly layered in materials and meaning. That meaning is grounded in a fascination with structure and space, whether natural or man made. “The subject matter of my art is essentially landscape reinterpreted, altered or transformed. It continues to evolve in medium and style,” says Mortimer.

Her paintings often reflect an inner dialogue trying to reconcile both encroaching urban sprawl and the vastness of agricultural lands. It is that push-pull that infuses her work.
