Sonja Mortimer immigrated to Canada from Denmark with her parents settling in Ontario. A chance visit to an outdoor children’s water-colour class, Sonja was inspired to create her first piece of work. She has had a paint brush or a pencil in her hand ever since.
Mortimer is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, York University's Fine Art program and a former visual arts specialist/teacher.
Sonja is a member of the Colour and From Society.
Mortimer has worked with a variety of mediums throughout her career however, the primary focus in recent years is on acrylic painting and collage, .
Her body of work has grown increasingly layered in materials and meaning.
That meaning is grounded in a fascination with structure and space, whether natural or man made.
